HDMI is compatible with the Un-compressed signals used by DVI so no signal conversion needs to take place. HDMI to DVI Cables can support Full 1080p Resolution.   There is no loss of video quality when these types of Cables are used.  HDMI to DVI-D Cables are commonly used to connect HD capable equipment such as Home computers, Laptops to TV's / Monitors. Due to DVI only carrying the Video Signal HDMI to DVI conversions are Video only.
